"Cool Sheikhs and Muslin Hip-Hop: Making Vernacular Muslim Identities in Europe and North America" By Dr. Peter Mandaville.

This talk will explore some of the ways in which Muslim identity and Islamic knowledge are articulated via media and other discursive formations that resonate with the unique features and challenges of Muslim communities in Europe and North America. Through an overview of various forms of popular cultural production, including music, short videos, and new forms of consuming religion, this presentation explores the nature of contemporary Islamic religious authority and its role in the construction of a Western Islamic vernacular.
